The Protein Bar Illusion
Protein bars have become a $500 million industry in Australia. They're marketed as the perfect healthy snack — high protein, convenient, and nutritious. But scan most protein bars with KnowYourFood and you'll find they're ultra-processed (NOVA 4), loaded with artificial sweeteners, and barely better than a chocolate bar.
We scanned every major protein bar brand available at Coles, Woolworths, and ALDI to find out which ones are genuinely healthy and which ones are just expensive junk food.
What to Look for in a Protein Bar
Before the rankings, here's what actually matters:
- •Protein: At least 15g per bar (not per 100g)
- •Sugar: Under 10g per bar (ideally under 5g)
- •Ingredients: Fewer than 10, with recognisable whole food ingredients
- •Sweeteners: Avoid sucralose (955), acesulfame K (950), and aspartame (951)
- •NOVA level: Aim for NOVA 3 or lower
- •Fibre: At least 3g per bar
The Top 5 Healthiest Protein Bars in Australia
1. Clif Bar (Chocolate Chip) — Health Score: 68/100
Clif Bar uses whole food ingredients including oats, rice crisps, and organic brown rice syrup. While it's still processed, it's closer to NOVA 3 than most competitors. The 10g of protein comes from soy protein isolate and whole oats.
Nutrition: 240 cal | 10g protein | 22g sugar | 5g fibre
Available at: Coles and Woolworths
2. Larabar (Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip) — Health Score: 65/100
Larabar is one of the cleanest protein bars on the market, made from just 3-4 whole food ingredients: dates, peanuts, and chocolate chips. No added sweeteners, no protein isolates, no emulsifiers.
Nutrition: 220 cal | 7g protein | 18g sugar (natural) | 3g fibre
Available at: Woolworths and health food stores
3. Carman's Protein Bars — Health Score: 62/100
Carman's is an Australian brand that uses recognisable ingredients including oats, nuts, and seeds. The protein content is modest (9-10g) but the ingredient quality is above average for the category.
Nutrition: 200 cal | 9g protein | 8g sugar | 4g fibre
Available at: Coles, Woolworths, and ALDI
4. Quest Bar (Chocolate Brownie) — Health Score: 58/100
Quest Bars are popular in the fitness community for their high protein (21g) and low sugar (1g). However, they rely heavily on sucralose (955) and contain many processed ingredients, keeping the score moderate.
Nutrition: 190 cal | 21g protein | 1g sugar | 14g fibre
Available at: Coles and Woolworths
5. Nature Valley Protein Bars — Health Score: 55/100
Nature Valley's protein bars offer decent nutrition with a relatively short ingredient list. The main concern is the use of glucose syrup and soy protein isolate.
Nutrition: 190 cal | 10g protein | 9g sugar | 3g fibre

The Worst Protein Bars in Australia
Mars Hi Protein Bar — Health Score: 28/100
Despite the "Hi Protein" branding, the Mars Hi Protein bar is essentially a chocolate bar with added protein isolate. It contains 26g of sugar, multiple artificial sweeteners, and a long list of additives.
Musashi High Protein Bar — Health Score: 32/100
Musashi bars are popular in gyms but score poorly due to their heavy use of artificial sweeteners (sucralose, acesulfame K), flavour enhancers, and ultra-processing.
Slim Fast Meal Bar — Health Score: 25/100
Marketed as a meal replacement, Slim Fast bars contain artificial sweeteners, colours, and a highly processed ingredient list. They're NOVA 4 and score among the lowest of any bar we tested.
The Better Alternative: Real Food
The honest truth is that most protein bars are a poor substitute for real food. For the same price as a premium protein bar ($3-5), you could buy:
- •A boiled egg + a small handful of almonds (15g protein, no additives, NOVA 1)
- •Plain Greek yoghurt (17g protein, 4g natural sugar, NOVA 1)
- •Tuna on rice cakes (20g protein, minimal additives, NOVA 2-3)
If you do buy protein bars, scan them with KnowYourFood first. The app will show you the health score, NOVA level, and every additive — and suggest healthier alternatives in the same category.
